The Story of the Damery Buck: On the second day of the 1993 Illinois firearm season, Brian Damery was in his treestand a full hour before dawn. His enthusiasm came from seeing a monster buck from the same stand the day before. His strategy paid offâ 10 minutes after sunrise the buck appeared in the distance with some does. After studying the deer for some time, Damery was convinced they wouldn't come his way, so he dropped out of his stand and started to belly crawl across sparse cover. He got to a low dip where he couldn't advance farther and patiently waited, lying in water, for the buck to come into range. After about 20 minutes the buck stood broadside at 75 yards. Damery raised his pump shotgun and fired, striking the buck solidly.
The Damery buck makes up for a lack of symmetry by having lots of points (17 total) and an extraordinary inside spread of 28", for a gross B&C score of 231-1/8. Over 30 points are deducted from the rack for a net score of 200-2/8 to place it at the #15 B&C typical of all time and the #2 typical for the state of Illinois.
